David was the third of ten children born to Johannes Adam and Barbara (Kesen) Zehner Sr. His brothers and sisters were: Catherine, Maria, Magdalena Mary, Christina, Johannes "John", Henry, Benjamin, Jacob and Stephen Zehner.

David married Elizabeth Swartz, daughter of Jacob and Christina (Gorr) Swartz, in 1817 in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. They became the parents of the following eight children: Abraham, David Jr., Maria Polly, Catherine, Frances, Elizabeth, Christina, and Hannah Zehner.
