Mary D Mayes, daughter of Mr and Mrs Thomas L Mayes, was born in Piqua, Miami Co, Ohio on 17 Aug 1856. She came to Iowa with her parents when she was three years old. From Cedar Rapids, the family made the journey to La Porte City in a flat-bottom steamboat and located on a farm in Big Creek Twp, four miles west of here and known as the old Thomas Mayes homestead.
She grew to womanhood on the home farm and was married to David L Nutt on 7 Mar 1878. They lived on farms near here until 1 Mar 1910, when they moved to Waterloo to an acreage on La Porte Road. Mr Nutt died on 25 Feb 1928, after a long illness and since then Mrs Nutt has continued to live in the home, one of the sons remaining with her.
She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waterloo and took an active part in the Social Band organization when works for the Orphan's Home in Council Bluffs, as long as her health permitted.
