SPRINGFIELD - Sarah Altman, 86, died Thursday at home with her family by her side. Born on July 10, 1924 in New York City, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Leah Zeldis. Sarah attended the City College of New York with a major in accounting. She was the bookkeeper for the family business Altman Brothers Paper Co., Inc. Sarah was also the first bookkeeper for the Kings Department Stores. She was a member of Temple Beth El and its sisterhood, the Springfield Jewish Community Center and its Foxes & Belles, B'nai Brith Women, the American Civil Liberties Union and a life member of Hadassah. Sarah was a former treasurer of the Hadassah Thrift Shop, a volunteer for Rachel's Table, and participated in the Read A Loud Program at the Alice Beal School. She loved to play mah-jongg and scrabble. Sarah enjoyed life to the fullest and loved her friends and family with all her heart. She was predeceased by her husband Bernard S. Altman, who died on June 8, 1987. Sarah is survived by her three sons Ron of Baltimore, MD, Melvyn of Springfield, and Elliot (Phyllis) of Longmeadow, her grandsons Jason, Brian, and Ian, and her special niece Ronna (Larry) Tillman. The funeral will be Sunday 12 noon at the Ascher-Zimmerman Funeral Home with burial in Beth El Cemetery. Shiva will be at 234 Brookwood Dr. Longmeadow, Sunday thru Thursday with evening services.
