James Knowles was listed on the 1818 tax payer list before Alabama became a state.
He was listed on the first Conecuh County Census as head of household but alone.
Covington County was created from a part of Conecuh in the early 1820s.
He was listed on the 1830 Covington County Census with a wife and four others in his household.
The Knowles family is listed in the Jefferson Davis College Archives as one of the families that worked hard to create the town of Brooklyn, Alabama.
He had moved his family to near Repton, Al. before 1850. On the 1850 Conecuh County Census, his oldest two children were listed with their Spouse's in their own households.
The other six were living in his household along with his Daughter in law, Elvira and his Grandson, John Harrison (2 months old), son of Daniel G. and Elvira.
The church of latter day saints listed James, his wife Sarah and all eight children as members of the first baptist church of Monroeville, Alabama.
Knowles-Dotelle Cemetery was likely created when he died at the age of 59 in 1853. Most family listings for James has him as being born in Georgia, But his eighth born Child Robert Harrison stated on the 1900 Conecuh Census that his father Jim was born in North Carolina.
