Born 20 July 1830 at Loch Laird, Rockbridge County, Virginia to David Laird and Mary Paxton Edmondson.

James married first 26 November 1857, Sarah Maria Patterson of Augusta County. They had a son, James Edmund "Eddie" Laird born 6 June 1859. His wife, Sarah, died 8 days later on 14 June 1859 in East Athens, Tennessee.

James married second on 6 November 1861, Mary Elizabeth Parry of Lexington area, Rockbridge County. They had three sons together.

James served in the Confederate State Army during the Civil War but resigned in 1863 after injury and difficulty with asthma.

Near the end of the Civil War, James and Mary moved to Georgia and finally settled in Decatur, DeKalb County, Georgia to make a new beginning. He farmed and later opened a successful drug store.

James died 29 June 1878 at half past 10 o'clock of "dropsy of the chest."
