"Death of C. N. Averill"

"Chas. N Averill, who has been in poor health for several years, died at his home in Bear Creek last Friday morning. The funeral was held Saturday at the farm, Rev. Bacon officiating, and was attended by an immense concourse, to pay their tribute of respect to one of the first settlers, and a man held in the highest esteem by all.

"Mr. Averill was born in Bethany, Genessee Co., N. Y., Nov. 1st, 1825. In 1837 his family removed to Indiana where he remained until 1852 when he came to this state,m settling in Dane county. In the spring of 1855 he came to this county and settled on the farm where he died, being the first settler in Bear Creek valley. His was the second entry of land made in that section, Mr. McGuinn (father of Thos. McGuinn) having entered an 80 the fall previous, but did not move on to it until after Mr. Averill came. The country being all new Mr. Averill had to make his own reads and bridges from Osseo to his new home, and was the first person to come through with a team. He served as County Clerk in 1873-4, and County Treasurer the following two years, has been town clerk of Lima for about 30 years, being re elected [sic] year after year, usually without opposition, and has held the office of Secretary of the Farmers' Insurance company ever since its organization. We often hear it said: "He did not have an enemy in the world," and if this can be truthfully said of any man, Charles N. Averill is that man. Quiet, unassuming, obliging and honest, to form his acquaintance was to become his friend--and once a friend, always one. He was married Nov 1st, 1848, to Miss Fanny Keenan, who survives him, together with their four children, Mrs. Wm. Black, Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Fanny Hammer, Fairfield, Iowa, Mrs. Carrie Bley, Chicago, and Chas. K. Averill of Lima all of whom were present at the funeral."

Obituary in Pepin County Courier, 25 Jan 1895. Transcribed by Snyder Born 28 Jan 2011. (Minor punctuation changes made.)
