"Mrs. Fannie Averill."

"Mrs. Fannie Averill whose maiden name was Keenan was born in Claugen Kings Co. Ireland April 3rd. 1823.

"In 1836 in company with three brothers and a sister whe emigrated to America and settled in La Grange Co. Ind. In 1847 she married Charles N. Averill in Dane Co. this state. They spent the first years of their married life in Ind. but news of the richness of the land in Northern Wisconsin had reached them and in the fall of 1854 Mr. Averill came here and being impressed with the beauty of the country entered the quarter section which afterward became his home.

"In the Spring of 1855 Mr. Averill accompanied by his wife started across the country from Beef River and reaching their new home on Bear Creek on the 28th of May. Here was started the first farm in Bear Creek and where by industry they built themselves a fine home. Mrs. Averill's oldest daughter Mrs. W. M. Black now of Des Moines, Iowa was the first girl born in the valley. The other children are, Mrs. J. C. Bley of Chicago, Mrs. J. M. Hammer of Fairfield, Iowa and C. K. Averill our present County Clerk. Their oldest child, a son, died before they came to this section. Her children were all with her during her final illness and ministered with loving hands to her comfort, all this with the best medical aid attainable could not stay the relentless hand of the destroyer the final end came on the 23rd ult. when she calmly passed away.

"Mrs. Averill was a Christian lady, a member of the Congregational Church of this city. She exemplified in her daily life the principles taught by the Divine Teacher. She possessed a warm heart, and genial disposition coupled with rare tact and adaptability which endeared her to her acquaintances. Her religion was shown in her every day life and in the discharge of the many duties that came to her as a wife mother and friend, all of which during a long and busy life she performed with great thoroughness rarly [sic] equaled. The funeral took place at the family residence on Thursday of last week, Rev. A. Kidder assisted by Rev. A. Chambers of this city officiating. The interment was made in the Durand cemetery. A large number of friends mourn with her relatives in their sorrow."
