U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Vanderbilt University, in 1933, from Cumberland University School of Law, in 1934, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law in Smithville, Tennessee. He was an attorney for Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., (1935-38) and assistant secretary of the Federal Trade Commission, (1938-40). During World War II, he served as a Major in the U.S, Army on the staff of the Judge Advocate General, War Department, (1942-46). After his discharge, he was chairman of the DeKalb County Democratic Executive Committee in 1946. In 1947, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth Congress and to the next fourteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1977. Not a candidate for reelection, he lived in retirement until his death at age 73 in Nashville, Tennessee.
