Helen was born in Indianola, Iowa on February 29, 1924, the daughter of Leo Preston Howe and Lela Hadley Howe. She graduated from Osceola High School as Salutatorian of the graduating class of 1944. She taught in the Jamison Country School in Clarke County and later in Warren County.
She was united in marriage to Earnest Edwin Stearns on January 26, 1945 in Princeton, MO, and to this union three children were born. She worked as a bookkeeper for Robinson's Department Store in Osceola for 23 years.
