Mary Ellen Phipps, 85, formerly of Emporia and Matfield Green, died on Tuesday (Jan. 25, 2011) at the Golden Living Center in Cottonwood Falls.
Mary Ellen was born on Oct. 4, 1925, in Springfield, Colo., the daughter of Frank Diener and Nettie Erma Adams Swanson.
She married Lloyd Nathan Phipps on June 2, 1946, in Ottawa. He died on Jan. 22, 1997, in Emporia.
Mary graduated from Matfield Green High School and the Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia. Her first teaching job was in Cimarron, the fall of 1945, and then in the Chase County area, she also taught at Emporia State University Library and was a librarian at the Americus School. She was a member of First Christian Church in Emporia, and she enjoyed active memberships in various professional, civic and social organizations.
Surviving family members include a son, Alan Lloyd Phipps of Matfield Green; daughters, Sheila Cooper of rural Elmdale, Valerie Ringler of rural Emporia and Michele Stackley of rural Strong City; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frank Melvin Swanson; and a sister, Neva Mae Mentzer.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in Emporia. Pastor Bob Colerick will conduct the service. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery in Emporia. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.
Memorial contributions to First Christian Church in Emporia or Hospice Care of Kansas, may be sent in care of the funeral home.
