Lombard, James D. 75, of Hart, passed away Friday, August 17, 2007 at home. He was born September 24, 1931 in Hart to Clyde and Genevieve (Wachter) Lombard. He married Sue Ann Hale on July 3, 1952. She passed away January 26, 1997. Mr. Lombard served with the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1968. He was a tank commander during the Korean War and a helicopter pilot with 225 combat missions in Viet Nam. He was awarded the Air Medal nine times. In the late 1950's and early 1960's he was instrumental in proving that the helicopter could be used as a weapons platform (gunship). Mr. Lombard worked at Shaw Real Estate in Pentwater and later operated Lombard Real Estate in Hart. From 1981 to 1996 he worked as a contract security manager for N.A.S.A. He was employed in that capacity first at the Johnson Space Center and the last six years at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. He was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masonic Lodge #200 of Pentwater, Scottish Rite In the Valley of Grand Rapids and the Association of Retired Officers. He is survived by his children, Lucinda (James) Shafer, Lance Lombard, Allen Lombard and Tamera Kokx Robb; grandchildren, Emily (Robert) Pearson, Brek Shafer, Jacob, Caleb and Kristina Lombard, Jason (Tracy) Harper and Amber Blanchard-Lombard; great-grandchildren, Logan and Libby Pearson and Owen Harper; sister, Marjorie Harrison; sisters-in-law, Mary Lombard, Joyce Lombard, Rose Near and Ida VanderZanden; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Genevieve; daughter, Glenda Lombard Cain; and brothers, Clyde and Tony Lombard. Interment with full military honors will be in Hart Cemetery.
