Author of juvenile mystery novels. Born Mary Grace Childs, she was a graduate of Bridgewater State Teachers' College in Massachusetts. After graduating in 1931, Mary Childs taught for one year in Kentucky. In 1932, she returned to Massachusetts where she taught fifth and sixth graders. In 1937, she married William Jane and moved to Newcastle, Maine. She gave up teaching to raise their two sons. Reading aloud to them sparked an interest in children's literature. After the boys were grown, she returned to teaching. From her teaching experiences, she learned that many reluctant readers could be encouraged to read with mysteries. In 1955, she wrote her first book, a juvenile mystery entitled "Mystery in Old Quebec." Over the next 15 years, Mrs. Jane authored more mystery novels including such titles as "The Ghost Rock Mystery," "Mystery at Shadow Pond," and "Mystery on Echo Ridge." She continued writing at the rate of one book per year until her last book in 1970 when she retired.
