He retired from CSX Railroad, having worked as a blacksmith in the L & N Railroad's South Louisville Shops. He was also an "old fashioned" square dance caller, having called for dances in the local area for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Kentucky Railway Museum where he was the weekday conductor for the last five years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Nell Dant Bryan, in 1986; five brothers, Alvin Bryan, Herman Bryan, John Bryan, Raymond Bryan and Albert Bryan; and four sisters, Mary Frances Nash, Bernadette Waters, Catherine Bryan and Winifred Bryan. Survivors include his wife, Blanche Carter Bryan; eight children, Francis Dant "Frank" Bryan, Rita Catherine Nichols, William Daniel "Danny" Bryan and Melanie Ann Reesor, all of Elizabethtown, the Rev. Kevin Joseph Bryan who is pastor of St. Raphael Parish in Louisville, Alice Marie Noltemeyer of Lebanon Junction, John Edgar "Ed" Bryan of Glendale and Mark Gerard Bryan of Munfordville; five stepchildren, Debbie Goodin of Elizabethtown, Brenda Somers of Prospect, Shyanne Powell of Jamestown, James "Bubby" Powell of Hodgenville and Janie Wilson of Fairfield, Ohio; two sisters, Agnita Gabriel Nett of Louisville and Lillie Marie Lee of Lebanon Junction; a brother, Joseph Eugene Bryan of Lebanon Junction; five granddaughters; and nine grandsons. The funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at St. James Catholic Church in Elizabethtown with the Rev. Dick Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Saint Clare Cemetery in Colesburg.
