Robert W. Hellriegel

FOSTORIA -- Robert W. Hellriegel, 92, passed away on January 20, 2011 at Independence House in Fostoria. He was born on June 7, 1918 to William C. and Anna G. (Scharf) Hellriegel and was a lifelong resident of the Fostoria and Findlay area. He and Marian (Helfer) were married on August 31, 1957 and they enjoyed 44 years of marriage at the time of her death in 2002. His brother, Charles, also preceded him in death.
He served as a 2nd Lieutenant and a pilot in the Army during World War II. After the war, he owned a Piper Cub for a few years. He was self-employed most of his life and retired from the Hancock County Courts where he worked in the microfilming department. From 1986 until 2008, he was a volunteer of the Bureau of Concern's free tax aid program that involved learning to use computers and ongoing training by the IRS. Over the years, he volunteered with many organizations including the Good Shepherd Home and literacy programs of an elementary school and the Welfare Department. He was also a ham radio operator for many years. He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Findlay.
Bob was a humble, multi-talented man who always enjoyed learning new things. He was a very kind and loving man who expressed genuine interest in the lives of his nieces and nephews and their families. He will be dearly missed by all of them.
He is survived by nieces and nephews, Carol (Gene) Woodrick, Keith (Patty) Copley, Zane (P.J.) Baughman, Jane Helfer (Bob Tucker), Lynette (Ron) Conine, James Helfer, and Kyle (Patti) Baughman and their families. He is also survived by brother-in-law, Howard Baughman, sister-in-law, Mabel Hellriegel, and cousin, Kay (Cal) Tritt.
Visitation will be held from 12-2 p.m. at the Harrold-Floriana Funeral Home, Fostoria, Ohio on Sunday, January 30, 2011. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Pastor Debbie Kaylor officiating. Military Honors will be performed by the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad. Burial will be private in the Benton Ridge Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Andrews United Methodist Church or to the Hancock County Veterans Memorial Squad.
Bob's family extends heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Independence House for the extraordinary care and compassion shown to Bob during his two-year residence and most recently to his family. Online condolences can be made to the family at www.hffh.net.
