Harbor Plunge Ends Fatally for Veteran
Frederick Post - July 3, 1947

Word was received here Wednesday of the death of Herbert V. Morningstar, 38-year-old World War II veteran, formerly of Frederick, who drowned when he fell into the Baltimore Harbor Tuesday afternoon from a Pratt Street pier.

The veteran, who had been sitting on the pier, was seen to fall into the water and his cries for assistance here heard by workmen nearby. Although they immediately ran to his assistance, Morningstar had disappeared. Baltimore police recovered the body after grappling from a rowboat for half an hour. The police and a fire department ambulance crew applied artificial respiration for nearly an hour before Morningstar was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Morningstar was formerly a member of a Frederick unit of the National Guard and during the War had served in the Army, being stationed at Fort Meade. After being discharged, he worked as a brakeman for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and had for some time made his home with his brother in Silver Spring.

The brother, Ernest M. Morningstar, 619 Mississippi Avenue, Silver Spring, claimed the body.

Morningstar had been away from Frederick for about twelve years, it was said here on Wednesday, although having frequently visited here in the interim. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Archie Morningstar, this city. Besides his brother, he is survived by a cousin, Mrs. Cora L. Morningstar, Davis Avenue; three uncles, Charles and Algie, Barnesville, and Edgar Morningstar, Bethesda; and an aunt, Mrs. Laura E. Orme, Washington.

NOTE:
*According to court testimony, in which Herbert was convicted of vehicular manslaughter in 1930, his brother, Clark, told how Herbert had been an orphan since he was three years old - So both his parents were dead by 1912.
