J. R. Benkie, Druggist at Kouts, Dies
Was Prominent In Civic, American Legion Activities

A two week's illness proved fatal Sunday to John Raymond Benkie, 57, Kouts druggist and prominent American Legion member.
Benkie died at 12:30 a.m. yesterday in Porter Memorial hospital, Valparaiso, of complications. He was admitted to the hospital only two days before.
For many years Benkie had been identified with the mercantile life of Kouts along with father, the late John G. Benkie. He was also one of Kouts' most enthusiastic civic boosters.
For more than 20 years he served as Kouts representative for The Vidette-Messenger.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday in the Kosanke Brothers' chapel in Kouts, with the Rev. Robert Vander Hart, of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland cemetery, west of Kouts.
Friends may call at the Kosanke Brothers' funeral home from 7 o'clock this evening and up until time of services Tuesday.
A native of Kouts, Benkie was born May 14, 1892, a son of the late John G. and Amalia A. Benkie. All his life was spent in Kouts. He was graduated from Kouts high school.
Prominent in American Legion circles, Benkie served in World War I, going overseas with Evacuation Hospital. No. 22.
In 1920 when the William Radilyack Post, 301, American Legion, was formed in Kouts, Benkie was one of the most active members of the post. For 13 years he served as adjutant, and was commander of the post on two occasions.
Lists Servicemen
During World War II he compiled a list of the names and addresses of all Pleasant township men in service for the information of friends and relatives. This list was later used on a memorial plaque which was erected by the Town of Kouts at the end of the war.
Benkie was Kouts Legion post commander for the term of 1945-46, when World War II veterans were returning from service. He induced many of these veterans to join the Legion and helped build up their interest in the organization. At the time of his death he was acting as service officer.
He was also credited with being one of the leading workers for the construction of the community building in Kouts promoted by the Legion.
He was a member of the Evangelical Reform church.
Surviving are three sisters, Misses Louise A. Benkie and Etta L. Benkie, of Kouts, and Mrs. L. Mae Ling, wife of Dr. Frank E. Ling, of Hebron, and one nephew, Dr. John F. Ling, of Richmond, Ind.
