Rebecca Hasseltine was the daughter of John Hasseltine and Rebecca Burton Hasseltine of Bradford, Massachusetts.

She married "Joseph Emerson, the Congregationalist, son of Deacon Daniel and Ama Fletcher Emerson. He was born 13 Oct 1777. Graduated at Harvard College, 1798. Tutored there, 1801-1803. Studied for the ministry with Rev. Nathaniel Emmons, D.D. of Franklin, Massachusetts. Ordained pastor, Beverly, Massachusetts on 21 Sep 1803, resigned, 21 Sep 1816. Without charge, Byfield, Saugus, Massachusetts 1818-1821, establishing there a Young Ladies Seminary, meanwhile preaching 1821-1824; and Wethersfield, Connecticut 1824-1833. Mary Lyon, the founder of Mount Holyoke Seminary, was one of his pupils. Spent the winters of 1823 and 1830 at Charleston, South Carolina. Gave many courses of lectures on history, astronomy, education and the millennium. Wilmington, North Carolina, 1826-1827; and Beverly, Massachusetts, 1829. Died Wethersfield, Connecticut, 13 May 1833.
DIED: At the residence of her son in this county, on Monday last, Mrs. Emerson, mother of the Rev. Luther Emerson. Per the Staunton Spectator (Staunton, Augusta Co., VA), Volume 31, #13, dated 15 Feb 1854.
