John B. Carpenter was born around Atlanta Georgia on April 26, 1862 to George and Susannah A. (Eison) Carpenter. He had 4 sisters: Arkansas Jane (Carpenter) Ball, Lucy H. (Carpenter) Hays, Amanda V. Carpenter and Laura Ella (Carpenter) Hays. He married Margaret Elizabeth Wade on November 19, 1887 in Chattooga County, Georgia. They had one child: Roy Benona Carpenter.

It is thought that John and Margaret separated due to home difficulties and John spent some time in St. Louis, MO. John made his way to his sister Lucy's home in Cooke County, Gainesville, Texas around 1901 - 1902. John and Margaret's son, Roy, was mostly raised by Lucy (John's sister) and Lawrence Hays, as a foster child. John died at Lucy's home in Gainesville Texas, shortly after his arrival, on June 8, 1902.
