Joseph J. Scherschel, 83, of Windsor Lane died at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Four Seasons Health Care Center.

He attended Lawrence College, Northwestern University and Art Center in Los Angeles and was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving as a photographers mate first class.

He worked for the Milwaukee Journal from 1940 to 1946 and Life magazine from 1947 to 1962.

He began as a staff photographer for the National Geographic magazine in 1963 and became assistant director of photography in 1972. He retired from the National Geographic Society in 1985.

Mr. Scherschel was a member of the White House News Photographers Association and was awarded the group's Grand Award at its annual contest in 1972 for two photos taken in Hungary.

He was a member of North Christian Church.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20 at North Christian Church with the Rev. Lanny Lawler officiating. A reception will follow the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to Love Chapel, Bartholomew County Senior Center, Hospice of South Central Indiana or the Bartholomew County Humane Society.

Mr. Scherschel was born on Dec. 18, 1920, in Chicago, the son the Alexander and Elizabeth Marie Kratochvil Scherschel. He married Elizabeth M. Harris on Feb. 19, 1965.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Jennifer A. Scherschel of Flinthill, Va., and Elizabeth A. Shaw of Austin, Texas; and grandchildren, Erin and Elliott Eaton of Flinthill and Harrison and Lauren Shaw of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, George and Frank Scherschel.
