He was born Jan. 14, 1920, in Shawnee.
Coates graduated from graduate of Shawnee High School in 1938 and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He moved to Elyria around 1941 and worked in his family's business, Coates Brothers Roofing. He was also employed at the former York International in Elyria, from which he retired in 1982.
He enjoyed playing cards, travel and his dog.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Evelyn M. (nee Hogan); sons, Robert of Lorain and Gary of Elyria; daughters Barbara Casica of Auburndale, Fla., and Jean LaVey of Lorain; brother, Jack Coates of Grafton; and eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David Coates; his parents, Gilbert and Margaret (nee Gillespie) Coates; brothers Charles, Richard, Gilbert, Billie and Don Coates; and sisters Margaret Sheline, Lenora O'Brien and Vinnie Coates.
Friends may call Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at Dicken Funeral Home, 323 Middle Ave., Elyria. On Thursday, friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. at Grace Baptist Church, 719 Root Road, Lorain. The Rev. Jay Roller will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
