Helen was the older of two daughters born to Elmer Perry and Nettie (Balliett) Swartz. Her younger sister was Cleo Kathryn (1907-1994).

Helen married Dice Chatlain Comstock on January 1, 1921. They became the parents of one daughter and three sons:

Thomas Edwin, b,. 3 November 1923
Jerald Chatlain, b. 25 December 1927
Kenneth Eugene, b. 7 June 1930
