Mary Catherine Pflaum was the second child and eldest daughter born to George A. Pflaum and Catherine M. Hughes. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy (the predecessor to Julienne High School) in Dayton, then studied journalism at the University of Notre Dame and voice at the Cincinnati Conservatory. She then became editor of the Young Catholic Messenger and worked for her father's publishing company, George A. Pflaum Publishers, eventually becoming treasurer and vice president of the company.
Mary and Dr. Clement Fischer married on Saturday, July 12, 1920, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. They had no children together, but adopted Mary's niece, Mary Frances Pflaum, when her sister-in-law Marie died four weeks after Mary's birth.
Mary Fischer was active in numerous professional and charitable organizations, including the Dayton Women's Press Club, Catholic Women's Club, Christ Child Society, Commission on American Citizenship, International Federation of Catholic Alumni, Notre Dame Alumnae Association, Catholic Author's Library, St. Joseph Orphan's Society, and more.
She died on Monday, May 29, 1961, at St. Elizabeth Hospital after a long illness. Her funeral was held at Holy Angels Catholic Church on Friday, June 2, 1961.
