US Senator. When the Civil War began he enlisted in the Confederate Army, and was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 13th Louisiana Infantry. However, he served much of the war as staff officer on the staff of Confederate Major General William Henry Talbot Walker. After the war he was admitted to the Louisiana State Bar in 1867, and amassed wealth as a successful sugar plantation owner. He was serving in the Louisiana State Senate when United States Senator Randall Lee Gibson died in office, and was subsequently elected as a Democratic Senator from Louisiana to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy. He served as a Senator from December 31, 1892 until March 1901, and had declined to run for another term in 1900. Earlier that year he had been nominated for the Vice Presidency by the "Gold Democrats", but he declined that nomination. He died in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1906. His grandson, Patrick Thomas Caffery, served as a Congressman from Louisiana from 1969 to 1973.
