A private family burial for Kathryn L. Fiala, an active Anchorage volunteer worker, will be held this morning at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Mrs. Fiala, 85, died Aug. 10 at Providence Hospital. Born July 5, 1902, in Telaqua, Okla., she had lived in Alaska the past 30 years. In 1968, she was instrumental in the founding of the Alaska chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons. In 1971 she was honored by the Susitna Business and Professional Womens Club during National Businesswomens Week, and was also appointed by Gov. William Egan as one of 18 representatives to the national White House conference on aging. In 1972 she was elected Woman of the Year in Anchorage. In 1976 Mayor George Sullivan appointed her to the senior citizens advisory commission to the municipality, and she also served as director of the information booth at Anchorage International Airport. In 1977 she was voted outstanding senior citizen by the Salvation Army. During her lifetime, she donated more than 4,400 hours as a nurses aide, 3,000 hours as a Gray Lady at veteran's hospitals, and over 500 hours assisting in disaster relief after the 1964 earthquake, and the 1967 Fairbanks flood. She leaves her husband, Joseph, of Anchorage; her son, Michael Dwyer of Fort Scott, Kan.; and her daughter, Patricia Bright of Midwest City, Okla.
