Mr. Matheny was a native of Waynesboro and moved to Jacksonville in 1955 from Orlando, Fla.
He was vice-president of Gate Petroleum Co. and was active in the company's community activities.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Matheny; a daughter, Cornelia Blair Ferguson; two sons, Russell Gaines Matheny and Scott Wallace Matheny, all of Jacksonville; his mother Annis Loving Matheny of Waynesboro; a sister, Delores Ober of Richmond; two brothers, Clemmer Matheny of Shenandoah and Richard E. Matheny of Lyndhurst; and four grandchildren.
A funeral was held at 11 a.m. Monday at Naugie Funeral Home in Jacksonville. Interment was in Oaklawn Cemetery.
The family requests that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society or another charity.
