John Frank Fetkovich was the son of refugee immigrants. His parents had difficulty with English and his father supported them by working in a coal mine. He was so poor that although an excellent student, he had to accept a suit loaned from a teacher for graduation.

He joined the US AAF immediately upon graduation, June 18, 1941 from Fort Hayes, Columbus, Ohio. He was among those FDR sent to England as part of the Lend-Lease Operation. While he was on leave, he accompanied a friend to New York where he met his friend's family, and eventually married a sister, Miss Claire Hocker. John went into business with a future County Executive and was a talented and successful businessman.

He was the brother of Marguerite, Michael C., George, Leona, and Irene Fetkovich Mizik. He enjoyed the company of his grandson, Joseph, and often took him on month-long tours after he retired.
