Vera Gengenbacher

Vera Elizabeth Gengenbacher, 97, of the St. Vincent Home in Quincy, Ill., died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, in the Home.

Born Feb. 21, 1913, in Quincy, she was the daughter of Peter J. and Emma Reis Peters. On April 29, 1931, she married Edward Gengenbacher in Quincy. He died Oct. 22, 1993.

Mrs. Gengenbacher was a homemaker and a cook at St. Dominic School until her retirement in 1976. She was a longtime and active member of St. Francis Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Ladies of St. Francis, the Quilters Club and the Tuesday Club. She was also a more than 50-year member of the Secular Franciscans.

Survivors include five children, Shirley Dingerson of Fountain, Colo., Kenneth Gengenbacher of Boseman, Mont., Gerald Gengenbacher and Richard Gengenbacher, both of Quincy, and Robert Gengenbacher of Fort Madison; 25 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter, three sisters and four brothers.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Duker & Haugh Funeral Home in Quincy with a Secular Franciscan service at 5:30 p.m.

The funeral service for Mrs. Gengenbacher will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Catholic Church in Quincy. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Quincy.

Memorials have been established for St. Francis Catholic Church, the Blessing Foundation for Hospice and the Secular Franciscan Order.
