Fairbrother, Rev. Richard L. 82 of Newaygo, passed away Sunday, April 9, 2006 at home. He was born April 4, 1924 in Grand Rapids, the son of Guy and Avolina (Beyer) Fairbrother. At the age of eight he came to Shelby from Cedar Springs. Rev. Fairbrother was a World War II Navy veteran. He married Marilyn Tripp on November 17, 1945 in Des Moines, Iowa. He pastored at churches of the Wesleyan denomination for fifty-two years. Churches he served in Michigan were in Kaleva, Wellston, Grass Lake, Lansing, Dayton Center and Sand Lake. He was currently the visitation pastor for Grant Wesleyan Church. Rev. Fairbrother spent seventeen years of his ministry in Kaleva where he also worked for the telephone company, was Fire Chief and drove school bus. He also drove school bus in other towns where he served as pastor. He loved gardening, especially growing flowers. Rev. Fairbrother is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his children, Dalene (Gene) Johnson of Ypsilanti, Charles (Renee) Fairbrother of Cedar Springs, Brian Fairbrother of Tucson, Arizona, Jerilene (Pat) Decker formerly of Grant, and Marlon Fairbrother of Muskegon; his sisters, Ellen (Stewart) Hardy of Hart and Maxine (Richard) Whittum of Kaleva; fifteen grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Jolene VanNoord and sister, Jennie Sanford Dekker. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 12, 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home (to find funeral home, go to the top of this page and click on "directions)" and Thursday, April 13, 11 a.m. until the funeral service at 2 p.m. at Grant Wesleyan Church. To find the church, from the north, take M-37 from Newaygo and go to the north edge of Grant. Turn right on 112th (Nelson's Farm Market is on this corner). Go past the farm market about ¼ mile to the church. Interment: Mt. Hope Cemetery in Shelby.
