About 1888 or 1889, Ernst and Wilhelmina followed his half-brother Fred Brunner or Bruner to Dayton, Ohio from Germany, presumably to find work. Ernst was a skilled carpenter and cabinet maker. He worked on Pullman railroad cars at Barney and Smith, and also repaired wagons.
Ernst died in June 1927 and was buried in Lot 5 Section 135, space 3 on June 24, 1927 in Dayton Memorial Park, next to his wife Wilhelmina, who had died about 6 months earlier.
