JOHN D. 'JACK' BLAND, 84, of Memphis, architect and co-owner of Wiseman, Bland, Foster & O'Brien, died of heart failure Tuesday at Bright Glade Nursing Center. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Louis Catholic Church, where he was a communicant, with burial in Calvary. Canale Funeral Directors has charge. He was a 1937 magna cum laude graduate and valedictorian of Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., and received his bachelor's and master's degrees in architecture at Rice University. He was a charter member and former president of Serra Club of Memphis, a member of Memphis and Shelby County Planning Commission and the Memphis & Shelby County Board of Adjustment, chairman of the board of directors for St. Peter Home for Children, and was inducted into the Christian Brothers High School Hall of Fame in 1994. Mr. Bland, the widower of Virginia Gavin Bland, leaves a daughter, Delia M. Bland of Memphis; a son, John D. Bland Jr. of Charlotte, N.C., and two brothers, Dr. G. Breen Bland of Millington and Dr. Basil A. Bland Jr. of Memphis. The family requests that any memorials be made to Monastery of St. Clare or Les Passees.
