Elwood Oscar Arnell, 86, died August 24, 2008 at Bear Lake Memorial Hospital, Montpelier, Idaho.

He was born April 4, 1922 in Paris, Bear Lake, Idaho to San Oscar Arnell and Mary Leona Lindsay. He was the oldest of four children. He has one sister, Lillian (Frank) Bolton and two brothers, Lund (Dorothy) Miller and Bruce (Martha) Oliphant.

He was raised on a farm in Dingle where he also attended grade school and then attended high school in Montpelier graduating from Montpelier High School in 1941.

In 1941 he met and courted his sweetheart, LaVon Dimick. They were married December 8, 1943 in the Logan LDS Temple. Just one month later Elwood entered military service, January 7, 1944 where he served in the European Theater, Italy and Greece, with the 803rd Military Battalion for 20 months as a provost Sergeant. He was released from military duty March 11, 1946.

He worked at Nielsen Furniture Co. and then for the Union Pacific Railroad as a car inspector until retirement.

Elwood was a very hardworking, physically active man with a love for life. He had a great love of farming, gardening and growing flowers. He had a wonderful green thumb and knowledge of growing many things. He also loved animals and taught his children to be loving and respectful of all living things. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and camping and being a campground host in the St. Charles and Immigration Campgrounds for a number of years.

He was an active member of the LDS Church where he served in many positions over the years including 20 years as an officiator and sealer in the Logan LDS Temple.

Elwood is survived by his four children, Terry Lynn (Ron) Glenn, Linda Lee (Scott) Crane, Shirla Ann (James) Bruce and son, ElRoy Arnell. He has 21 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lund, his wife, LaVon and two grandsons.

Funeral services will be held August 29 at 1 p.m. in the Montpelier First and Fourth Ward Chapel. The viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the chapel prior to services. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery, with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary.
