Eula Wood Bonner

SPARTANBURG – Eula Wood Bonner, 87, cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and the beloved widow of the Rev. Ernest W. Bonner, passed away peacefully Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Daughter of the late Robert Wood and Sallie Dewberry Wood, Mrs. Bonner was born Dec. 8, 1923, in Cowpens. She graduated from Cowpens Colored High School and earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Allen University in Columbia. She became a teacher and later a Licensed Practical Nurse, working in Cherokee County Memorial Hospital and later retiring from Golden Age Nursing Home in Inman.

She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star. She was the First Lady and a missionary at Haynes Grove Baptist Church in Cliffside, N.C. Mrs. Bonner, affectionately known as "Pretty Aintee," was known for her good cooking, flair for making cakes, decorating and design, her passion for life, love of God and her family, especially her "good grands," singing and playing the piano.

Eula and Rev. Bonner were married on July 25, 1948, and celebrated 38 years together prior to his death in 1987. She is also preceded in death by eight siblings.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Ernest Bonner Jr. (Annie) of Alameda, Calif.; her daughter Rosalind B. Tate of Spartanburg; her sister, Josephine Wood of Gaffney; two sisters-inlaw, Lillian Sutton and Ruby Byars Falls of Lynn, Mass.; grandchildren Major Lincoln Bonner, USAF (Dori) of Montgomery, Ala., Valerie Arroyo (Felipé) of Moore, Brandy Tate, Jenaye Bonner, Garrett Bonner and Austen Bonner, all of Alameda, Calif., Kacey Bonner of Los Angeles, Calif.; great-grandchildren Noelle (Noey) and Daschel (Dash) Arroyo of Moore; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Services will be held Friday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church, 712 Green River Road, Gaffney. The family will receive family and friends at the church from 12:30-1 p.m. prior to the service. The Rev. Lee Byers will officiate with interment in the church cemetery.
