Professional Football Player. He attended Charleroi High School in Charleroi, Pennsylvania before playing collegiate football at Duquesne University. While with Duquesne, he played under coach Elmer Layden, one of the Four Horseman of Notre Dame University. He joined the Pittsburgh Pirates (now Steelers) prior to the 1934 season. For nine seasons (1934 to 1942), he played at the tackle and place kicking positions all with Pittsburgh. He was one of the Steelers' first stars, a field goal specialist who led the team in scoring in 1935, 1936, 1939 and 1940. He led the NFL in scoring in 1935 and 1936. Niccolai posted a personal-best 28 points in both 1935 and 1936. He booted a Steelers'-best seven field goals in 1936, which that mark would not be broken for the next 14 years. He was the captain of the Steelers 1936 - 1940 and was voted the National Football League's top kicker in 1936. Following his playing career, Niccolai served as president and past president of the Pittsburgh Steelers Alumni Association.
