Cowan joined the Navy when he was 17 years old and retired after 21 years of service. He retired from civil service in 1996 and was a member of the Lillian Community Club, AM Vets, VFW, DAV, and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Susan Cowan of Robertsdale; four sons, James Cowan and Thomas Thrower, both of Elsanor, Mark Cowan of Robertsdale, and Guy Patrick Malonzo of Pensacola; seven daughters, Leslee Burroughs, Melody Cowan, Marilee Hawkins, and Teresa Thrower, all of Pensacola, Zhon Amber Malonzo of Flomaton, Mary Davidson of Mary Esther, Fla., and Dawn Reed of Elsanor; one brother, Jack Cowan of Thornton, Colo.; 24 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Bayview Funeral Home in Foley. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, with Eddie Waters officiating.
The family requests that donations be made to Mercy Medical Hospice in Fairhope. Arrangements are by Bayview Funeral Home in Foley.
