Russell Nord is the first of two sons born to Eric Adolf Nord and Olga Anne Frisk. He married Bette Baisden on Sept. 20, 1941 in Seattle, WA. His only daughter, Patricia Ann Nord, was born Aug. 7, 1943. Russell never met his daughter.

Russell was awarded a Silver Star for the action that cost him his life on July, 12 1944 during the battel of Saipan. The citation said in part, "while commanding a platoon of a heavy weapons (machine guns) company that had exhausted all weapons during an enemy counter attack, Russell charged out of his foxhole. Having no ammunition himself, he used his gun as a club. His action distracted the enemy long enough to permit the survivors to rejoin the perimeter. Lieutenant Nord continued to fight until overcome by the enemies bayonets and swords."
