US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served Arizona's 1st District in the US House of Representatives from 1987 until 1993. The son of longtime US Congressman John Jacob Rhodes, II, he received his BA from Yale University in 1965, and attained his law degree from the University of Arizona College of Law five years later. He served as a captain with the US Army during the Vietnam War, and upon his return home was Republican district chairman from 1972 until 1982. In 1987 Rhodes became John McCain's successor in the US Congress, when McCain left to serve in the Senate. After his political career, he returned to practicing law in Washington. Rhodes died of complications from an automobile accident in October 2010.
