Isham Davis Goolsby III, was a student in school when he enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 20, 1861. He was age 20 at the time. Isham was a Private, Company F., in the 44th Virginia Infantry. His military record states that he died in service at the Battle of Malvern Hill, Virginia. Isham was age 21 when he was struck by a shell, killing him and a man from another unit.

When a shell struck Private Isham D. Goolsby, killing him and a man from another unit. General Jubal Early, the brigade commander, witnessed the death of this young Fluvanna soldier from Lafayette Hill and mentioned it in his official report.
