Henry Plumard Wilson was born in Essex County, Virginia, the son of John Henry Wilson and his wife Adeliza "Addie" DeRieux. He married Ida Mae Coffer on 28 May 1887 in Carthage, Missouri, and together they had five children.

When Henry died his youngest child, Winifred, was just four months old. According to his grandson Harry Robert Wilson, Henry worked as a miner in the Joplin area and died of tuberculosis during a blizzard. Due to the snow and the frozen ground, Henry was not buried in the family plot but in the only section of the cemetery that was accessible at the time. Henry's widow, Ida, remarried but when she passed away in 1955, her gravestone was inscribed to include the name of Henry Wilson.
