Estella Schmidt was born in Copperas Cove, Texas , July 20, 1913 to Rev G.C. and Milda Brandenberger Brannies. She was a Southwestern University beauty – honor graduate in 1936, received her Masters in Education from U. of H. in 1969 with summer sessions at Univ. of Texas and U.S.C. in California. Considered a master reading teacher in Wharton and HISD for 32 years, her constant goal was to inspire learning. Her piano, violin, and vocal talents, her one-liner STELLA –SHOWS, her home-baked bread, her continued interest in her former students; kept her "favorite teacher" label. She was an active member of St. Marks Methodist Church for over 60 years.

Her beloved husband of 68 years, James A. (Jimmy) Schmidt preceded her in death December 20, 2007. She is survived by her son, Dr. Jimmy Schmidt and wife Genie; her grandchildren Sarah Schmidt and Charles Schmidt and wife Jennifer; her great-grandsons Barrett and Brandt Schmidt; her sisters Agnes Smith of Houston and Ruth Braeutigam of Fredericksburg – and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 10:00 AM at St. Marks United Methodist Church, 600 Pecore, Houston, Texas 77009. Visitation will be held one hour before the service in the sanctuary of St. Marks. Instead of flowers, Estella requested any donations to Lucille Leifeste Scholarship Fund at St. Marks UMC.
