- CUMBERLAND,MARYLAND -- James Joseph Burns, 73, of Cumberland, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at the Cumberland Nursing Center.
Born Nov. 15, 1925, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late James J. and Nina (Eichorn) Burns. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Edith M. Wolfington, Marguerite MacMillan, Virginia J. Burns; and one nephew, William P. Wolfington Jr.
Mr. Burns was a certified public accountant. He retired in 1990 as the Internal Auditor from First Federal Savings Bank. He had been employed by John Rollins, C.P.A., and the Celanese. He was a 1943 graduate of LaSalle High School. Mr. Burns was an avid tennis player and a member of several local tennis leagues. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church, and a member of Knights of Columbus #586.
Surviving are three nieces, Eleanor M. Watkins and husband, Robert, Nina M. Maphis, Carolyn J. Wolfington; and one nephew, James M. Wolfington, all of Cumberland; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., on Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake will be conducted on Tuesday at 8 p.m. with members of the Knights of Columbus participating.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Wednesday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. Thomas R. Bevan as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
