On Thursday, January 7, the day following the marriage of Miss Jennie Adams to Rev. John McMillan, the bride's aged father, James Adams, spent most of the forenoon in pleasant conversation with the guests, a number of whom still remained with them. About 11 o'clock he excused himself, saying he would lie down for a little while. Less than half an hour afterward, when Mrs Adams went to his room to call him to dinner, she found him stricken with paralysis, helpless and unconscious. The best medical skill was speedily summoned, but all attempts to restore consciousness proved unavailling. He lingered until last Saturday evening, when death kindly came to his relief. Funeral services were held at the residence on Monday. Rev. W. H. Clay of Frontier, a former pastor, preaching a most impressive sermon from Psalms 37.37 James Adams was born in Belfast, County Antrim, Ireland, April 15, 1820, and died January 9, 1897, aged 76 years. He came to America in 1845, settling first in Ohio. Four years later he came to California, where he has since continued to reside. He was united in marriage to Miss Laura Broughton, November 13, 1853. He is survived by his wife, seven sons, and two daughters. The remains were taken to Lester Cemetery for burial, the sons seting as bearers, and by them he was tenderly laid to rest. He united with the United Brethren Church in 1874, of which he remained a member until promoted to the church above.
