Lovell ( known as L.M. Howard) was the son of Elza Howard and Ellen Tippetts. He was raised by Ellen and stepfather William Irving and used the last name Irving as a child. He ran away at about age 14 and changed his last name back to Howard. His paternal grandmother was Mary Cathrene Howard. She was full blood Chippewa Indian born 1850 in Minnesota (according to family lore, but DNA results from four descendents don't show any Native American ancestry). She was supposedly an orphan and raised by John Howard who was an uncle of Elza's father William Howard who married Mary Cathrene Howard. Lovell Howard would therefore have one quarter Chippewa blood if true.

He served as a Private in Troop C, 11th Calvary, US Army for one year from 23 Jul 1920 to 22 Jul 1921. "Lovell M. Howard" received an Honorable Discharge dated 22 Jul 1921 from Troop C, 11th Calvary,US Army. He enlisted on July 23, 1920 at Fort Douglas, Utah for one year. At discharge he was paid $78.77 including travel pay to Georgetown, Idaho. His service was described as "Service Honest and Faithful". His character was described as "very good". His discharge was signed by Harry A. Buckley, Captain 11th Calvary, commanding Troop C. The discharge gives his birth info as "born in Brigham City, in the State of Utah". It says also "When enlisted he was 18 1/2 years of age and by occupation a Farmer". Further " He had blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion, and was 5 feet 5 1/2 inches in height". This was an "Honorable Discharge" and "by reason of Expiration Term of Service". marital status listed as "single".

Lovell was married twice. His first wife Tempest Irons m. 10 Oct 1921 at Jerome, Idaho bore him two children Deveree Lovell in 1922 and Bernice Rae in 1924. His second wife was Mary Pettingill m. 13 Feb 1929 at Gooding, Idaho who bore him seven children Ellen June in 1929, Nona Mae in 1931, Shirley Lucille in 1932, James Lavar in 1934, Walter Elden in 1935, David Charles in 1943, and Mary Gail in 1945. Walter died young in 1941, James in 1992, Ellen in 1999, Shirley in 2000, David in 2015, and Nona in 2017. His wife Mary died in 1999.

He worked for the City of Boise as Foreman at the Morris Hill Cemetary.

1910 US Census report for Idaho shows him living at Montpelier, Bear Lake County, Idaho with William P. and Druscilla Irving and was age six at time of census. Name listed is "Lovell M. Irving stepson." Place of birth "Utah".

Certificate of Death, State of Idaho, lists parents as father unknown and mother as "Ellen Tippets". Cause of death listed as related to colon cancer.
