John was made a freeman in 1682 and was largely employed in public offices: Colonel in the militia of an Ipswich Regiment and a merchant; town clerk in 1687; Deputy to the General Court with the title Lieutenant-Colonel; Counselor under the Charter of William and Mary in 1697; Judge of Probate of Essex County from 1702 to 1739; Justice of the General Sessions and Court of Common Pleas during all of which no appeal of his decision was ever made. He was strictly just, righteous, faithful, obliging, kind and condescending in all his relations and offices, whether as a counselor, judge (there was never an appeal of his judgment), husband, father, master, Christian, friend, or neighbor. He Died Sept’r 11 1739 AEt 87 & Madam Elizabeth Appleton his Relict & Eldest Daughter of ye Late Rev’d & Larned Presidant Rogers Whose Good Understanding Social Veartues & Christian Graces Were Eminent & very Engaging Still bringing forth Fruit in old age. She died March 13 1734 AEt 91 & John Appleton Who died August 23 1740 AEt 7 & Margaret Appleton Who died July 27 1747 AEt ?3 their grandchild & Children of Coll Daniel Appleton Esq’r & Elizabeth his Wife
