Adele was always a "character." She used to play with her cousins, the Chew boys. She and her mother, Fannie Bockius Fitzgerald, lived with her grandfather, Wilson Fitzgerald of Camden at 44 York Street, after her father, John Ellwood Jr Stockham died of enteric fever. She married Edward Clifford Ayres Sr., a childhood sweetheart of a Friends school in Philadelphia, and they had two children. She outlived her husband by a considerable margin, then died of cerebral vascular disease at Crestview Nursing Home in Kresson, NJ.
