AT REST

Died at her home three miles west of this city, Tuesday, July 13, 1896, after a long and painful illness, Mrs. Maria V. Reid, aged 62 years, 9 months and 2 days.

Mrs. Reid, whose maiden name was Beltz, was born in Bedford County, Pa. She was married to John T. Reid at Cumberland, Md., in the year 1850 where they resided until 1855, when they moved to Iowa City, Iowa. In 1856 they changed their location to Decatur, Ills; from there moving to this county in 1887.

Mrs. Reid was the mother of eleven children, seven of whom survive her: four sons who reside here, one in Philadelphia, one in Colorado, and a daughter living in Lincoln, Neb. In her life she filled the highest sphere of
a woman's duty as tender mother and a faithful wife. There are no qualifications or attainments that can usurp the place of these crowning jewels of womanhood.

It is a mighty sorrow that has fallen upon this family: the children who have been trained by her hand and the husband whose years too are waning for whom she has so long been a comfort and companion. The loneliness of his life can be imagined, the depth of his grief measured only by those who have suffered the same great sorrow we know and the full sympathy of our heart goes out to him.

Funeral services were held at the home of the family on Wednesday conducted by the Rev. John Thomas and the remains consigned to their resting place in the city cemetery.

John T Reid Native of Cumberland
He Is Survived by Brothers and Sisters Residing Here
Sons Wounded in Roosevelt's Cavalry

Relatives in this city have received word of the death of John T Reid, who died at Loveland, Colorado one week ago. The deceased was in his seventy third year and was a native of Cumberland. He was a brother of Mr. James Reid, the popular mail carrier, of this city, Mr. Robert Reid, Mr. William Reid, Mrs. Mary Willard, Mrs. Louise Berkley, Mrs. Margaret Couters and Mrs. Marion Fisher, all of Cumberland, and Mrs. J. T. Anderson, of Salina, Kansas. The deceased left Cumberland in 1856 and located In the west, returning to his native place only once afterward in his life, that visit having been prompted by his mother's death, which happened in 1867. Mr. Reid raised a large family of children, and among them were two sons who wore members of Col. Roosevelt’s Cavalry and each of whom were wounded in the charge of San Juan hill that, gave much to the war fame of the new President of the United States. The death of the former Cumberlander reminds local observers that four deaths have occurred in the Reid family recently in quick succession. The subject of this paper died on January 13. But a few week ago Thomas Reid, a cousin died from pneumonia at his residence in this city. On the 8th of last October George Reid, a brother of John T. Reid was killed by the cars, while in the performance of his daily duty in the B. & O. railroad company's yards at Cumberland, and but a little more than a year prior, Mrs. Martha Bell, a sister died at her home in the State of Missouri.
