Pilot Killed In Crash At Cobb Lake

The body of Airman second-class Lynn A. Ferguson of Clinton-Sherman Air Base was pulled from Fort Cobb lake about 5 p.m. Saturday. The crash of his single-engine T-34 trainer occurred shortly afternoon on the same day.

Civil Defense rescue workers, Larry Edwards and Doug Britton, of Elk City recovered Ferguson's body from the wreckage which lay in about 35 feet of water north and east of the dam. They said that parts of the fuselage, engine and wings were scattered over a large area of the lakes bottom. Also assisting in the recovery operations were Forrest Hall, Fort Cobb city marshal, and Mike Hedrick, lake patrolman.

The body of the 24-year-old airman had lacerations on the head and shoulders, and one leg was broken at the hip, according to those at the scene. The body was taken to the office of the Caddo county medical examiner in Anadarko for examination.

R.G. Henderson, marine concessionaire, said that prior to the accident, boaters and skiers had been complaining about the small plane buzzing their boats. One boater was able to get the serial number of the low-flying plane.

Vernon Miller, Del City, who was skiing in the vicinity of the tragedy reported that he saw water flying, and thought a boat had flipped.
