Robert Kirtley Baker was the only son born to Kirtley 'Whitey' and Clara B. Northern Baker. When born, Robert had two older sisters, Ruth and Mildred. His father Kirtley for some time was a professional baseball player as a pitcher and left fielder having played for the Pittsburgh Alleghenys, Baltimore Orioles, and the Washington Senators. His debut in professional baseball was on May 7, 1890 and his last game was June 14, 1899.
Robert K. Baker lived most of his life in Lawrenceburg, Indiana where he operated a grocery store for many years on Walnut Street. At the age of forty-two, in 1944 he was elected mayor of Lawrenceburg, replacing Loren L. Edwards. He served two terms as mayor, remaining in office until 1952 when he was replaced by Ted Fitch.
On June 13, 1934 in Clermont County, Ohio Robert married Mrs. Blanche Darling Lacy, widow of Virgil Charles Lacy, and instantly inherited two sons, Virgil and Joseph Lacy
