GIRARD--Mrs. Jennie Downey, 80 of Girard, died at 8 a.m. Sunday at the Girard Rest Home, She had been ill since November, 1970. Born Nov. 5, 1890, at Waverly, Mo., she moved to Weir as a young woman. She married Ben Downey Sept. 3, 1910, at Marshall, Mo., and they lived in Weir and Mulberry before moving to a farm near Girard in 1924. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Electa Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. She had been a past member of the Grand Army Republic Circle, and the William McKinley Post of the United Spanish American War Veterans Auxiliary. Survivors include the widower; two sons, Ben A Downey of Girard and Fred W Downey of Topeka; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Another son, Ralph L Downey died in 1954. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at W.D. Smith Chapel in Girard with the Rev. Gene Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Girard Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Fred Downey, Ward Downey, Steve Downey, Charles Hembree, William Hoyt and William Perry. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the chapel.
