Joan Cecelia Scheuer
82, of Lenox, died Friday January 14, 2011 at Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona while winter vacationing.
She was born January 6, 1929 in Detroit, the daughter of Edwin and Pauline (Smiley) Schultz and wedded Leonard H. Scheuer in Richmond November 4, 1950.
She moved with her parents to Richmond and graduated from St. Augustine Catholic High School. She was a 1950 graduate of the school of nursing at St. Joseph Hospital, Mt. Clemens. She enjoyed her work at Saratoga Hospital, Detroit as a surgical nurse and in labor and delivery. Her love for her ten children and grandchildren was only surpassed by her love for her husband.
With her husband, she moved to Lenox in 1966 from the family home in Fraser and owned and operated the Paramount Bar and Hotel in New Haven until 1980. Together they established the Phoenix Travel Agency in Richmond, which they owned for over 20 years.
Joan was an active parishioner of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Richmond and a member of the Daughters of Isabella.
Surviving in addition to her husband Leonard of 60 years are her ten children, Leonard (Donna) Scheuer of Lenox, Mary Joan (Thomas) Ballor of St. Clair, Kathleen (Dennis) Van Wagoner of Rochester, Rosemarie Scheuer Green Valley, AZ, Bernadette (Walter) Russell, Lenox, John (Patricia) Scheuer, Atlanta, GA, Paula (James) Fitzsimons of Lenox, Elizabeth (Darren) Murphy of Washington Twp, Patrick (Therese) Scheuer of Burtchville, Michael (Tammy) Scheuer of Lenox; sister and brothers, Mary Elizabeth (Russell) King of New Haven, Daniel Schultz of Clinton Twp., Lawrence Schultz of Cadillac; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donald and Patricia Scheuer of Casco Twp. Marie Whiter Clinton Twp., Theresa and Duane Zurek Washington Twp.; 29 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews and friends.
She is preceded in death by a granddaughter baby Elizabeth Joan; sister and brothers, Paula Ruprecht, Bernard and Edwin Schultz (Vivian), sister in law Sharron Schultz and brother-in-law Lawrence Whiter.
Her family honors the memory of Joan and invites you to visit and share Wednesday 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with 6:30 p.m. rosary/scripture service at Kaatz Funeral Directors, Richmond. Visitation Friday begins at 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home with procession for Rite of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Richmond. Fr. Joseph Plawecki, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will be in St. Michaels Cemetery, Richmond.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Richmond Catholic Education Foundation, founded by Joan's mother.
