Murder victim. Her death brought her national notoriety. When she disappeared about April 30, 2001, it sparked an immediate manhunt for her, and the story was followed closely in the news for over a year. When it was determined that she had just ended an affair with a married United States Congressman, Gary Condit, prior to her disappearance, he was pilloried in the media as the likely murder suspect, and as a result, lost his congressional seat in the 2002 election. The case is considered a classic example of the power of the media to wrongly influence public opinion. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of Robert and Susan Levy, and grew up in Modesto, California. She initially attended San Francisco State University, obtaining a BA degree in Journalism, and then began attending the University of Southern California to earn a Master's Degree in Public Administration. As part of her studies, she moved to Washington DC, where she interned with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. When she completed her degree requirements, and her internship ended, she prepared to return to California. She was last seen on April 30, 2001, and the next day, May 1, she apparently left her apartment to go jogging, just prior to leaving for the airport to make the return trip to California. On May 6, 2001, her parents called the District of Columbia Police Department, when she failed to return to their home. Police visited Levy's apartment near Dupont Circle, to discover that she had packed several bags for her departure, but apparently had not returned to the apartment since she left it on May 1 to go jogging. A police search of her computer indicated that she had last been looking at a website for the Kringle Mansion in Rock Creek Park, a popular site for joggers. Police performed a two searches of the Rock Creek Park area, finding nothing either time. Her parents told DC Police that she had been having an affair with Congressman Gary Condit, a married man who represented the 18th Congressional District in California where her parents were living. The news media run with the story, and it quickly became a media frenzy. Initially Condit denied having an affair, and later changed it to an affair that he had terminated the day before to her scheduled return to California. The media then hounded Condit, indicating that they believed he was hiding information. The media attacks on Condit finally quieted after the September 11, 2001 attacks on the nation replaced the story in the media's attention, but as a result of the continued media allegations of his having something to do with her disappearance, Condit lost his bid for reelection in the 2002 election. Chandra's skeletal remains were found in May 2002 by a man walking his dog, in a section of Rock Creek Park that had not been searched previously, but were within a mile of the Kringle Mansion. An autopsy produced sufficient evidence to call her death a homicide. In March 2009, police arrested Ingmar Guandique, an illegal alien from El Salvador, and charged him with the murder, after he was convicted of assaulting two other women in Rock Creek Park in similar incidents. In 2015 he was convicted of her murder but the case was overturned. At that point, he was deported to El Slavador.
